Advanced Academics and Talent Development (gifted services)

Grades K-12

APS gives the NNAT3 to all first graders and the CogAT to all second graders. Students who reach a benchmark score on these universal screeners are automatically screened for gifted services unless parents opt out. Anyone can also refer a student once a year, by April 1; a school committee reviews a portfolio of evidence.

  • The benchmark score for automatic screening is not published. Identification uses a holistic case study by a school-based committee (ability tests, achievement, observations and work samples). source

Deadlines

  • Referral deadline (2027-04-01): Referrals are due April 1 (or the first school day after spring break if April 1 falls during it). A student can be screened once a year. source

Appeals / retesting: Level One: a written appeal to the principal within 10 instructional days of the committee's decision. Level Two: a written appeal to the Director of Advanced Academics and Talent Development within 10 instructional days of meeting the principal. source
