Gifted test day checklist for K–3
Young children do their best thinking when they are rested, fed and relaxed. Use this list to keep the day ordinary.
The week before
- Keep practice short and light: one or two 10-minute sessions, nothing new.
- Confirm the date, time and place with the school, and whether your child should bring anything.
- Talk about the test simply: "You'll do some puzzles with your teacher. Just try your best."
- Keep bedtimes regular all week, not only the night before.
The night before
- No new puzzles. Read a favorite book instead.
- Lay out comfortable clothes and, if the school allows, a water bottle.
- Normal bedtime.
The morning
- A normal breakfast with some protein.
- Leave with time to spare; rushing is the most common source of stress.
- A warm send-off: "Have fun with the puzzles. I'll see you after."
Afterwards
- Ask what was fun, not how it went.
- Results usually take weeks. Whatever they say, your child is the same curious kid.
